It depends on where you sell and the project. For example, Europe has the strictest rules, where EPDs feed into whole-building assessments and public procurement by default. In North America there is no single federal law, but a growing set of state and agency rules increasingly require them. Buy Clean laws in California, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, New York and Minnesota, CalGreen, and GSA all call for a Type III EPD under ISO 14025 on publicly funded projects. Elsewhere, private demand fills the gap through programs like LEED and BREEAM, net-zero commitments, and tender requirements. In practice, no EPD might often lead to no bid.
Material choices are largely locked in early, during design, when architects and engineers select product. If your product carries a verified EPD at that stage, it can be compared, chosen, and written into the specification. If it does not, it is often filtered out before the conversation even starts. This is why an EPD is most valuable when it sits next to your BIM content, where specifiers are already searching and making decisions.
EPD pricing varies widely and providers quote in different ways. Some charge per EPD, some per LCA study, and some by hourly consulting rates, which makes quotes hard to compare.
