An interview with Matteo Gianninoto, BIM Coordinator

How & why BIM minimises costs and reduces the probability of errors

Building information modeling is rising to the top in the construction industry. But how does BIM contribute to a smarter, faster and greener industry? Let’s get the answers from Matteo Gianninoto, BIM Coordinator at Tecnoprogetti SA.

“I was captivated by BIM’s potential”

Matteo Gianninoto started working as an MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) engineer very early on in his career. He explains that the specialization was a real eye-opener that made him realize that it was time to explore new working methods:

“I read about BIM, experimented with some software, and became captivated by its multifaceted potential. So, I decided to get a certificate and become a BIM Specialist,” says Matteo.

Soon after, he became a BIM coordinator tasked to implement BIM for AG&C associati. Although he still collaborates with the company, he’s currently employed as a BIM coordinator at Tecnoprogetti SA studio, where he works with internal training and design.

So, what value has BIM provided so far? And in which ways does BIMobject help to alleviate his work? Let’s dive into it.

BIM: reducing costs and errors on the construction site

BIM, short for Building Information Modeling, is a highly collaborative and intelligent 3D model-based process for managing information across a construction project’s lifecycle.

The methodology harbors data about a model’s physical and functional components, which gives architecture, engineering, and construction professionals the insights and tools to plan, design and construct in a smarter, faster, and more sustainable way.

'The perks are plentiful for professionals and the world alike. For Matteo and his role as a BIM coordinator, he’s highly aware of them all. However, there’s one personal benefit that stands out a little extra:

“The methodology gives me greater control over the construction phase and site. Coordination is improved, which minimizes cost and reduces the probability of errors.”

“BIM enables smoother communication and improved efficiency”

BIM isn’t a method meant for one, two, or three people. It’s a way for an entire project team to share information about a project – from concept to construction and maintenance. Matteo explains:

“BIM enables real-time collaboration between all stakeholders involved in a project, which leads to smoother communication and improved time efficiency.”

Why BIM is critical for sustainability

BIM plays a massive part in improving communication and resource efficiency in the construction industry. But that’s not all. The method offers a way to make (environmentally) conscious decisions on which components to include and to calculate precise material needs to reduce waste. Matteo explains:

“Sustainability is a subject that must be approached with utmost importance and sensitivity. We must take it into account when we develop projects and select information components,” says Matteo Gianninoto.

The construction industry has flown under the media radar when it comes to our impact on the environment. The sad fact is that CO2 emissions from the building sector are at an all-time high, representing 38% of the world’s total. So, how can BIM contribute to a more sustainable world? Matteo explains:

“BIM gives architecture, engineering, and construction professionals a holistic digital source of information. This is a great step forward when it comes to mitigating a project’s environmental impact.”

“BIMobject reduces the modeling time”

There’s no doubt that Matteo Gianninoto is a devout BIM enthusiast. But in a time where digitalization in construction is becoming the new norm, professionals need a smooth way to pick the right BIM objects for their BIM projects. That’s where BIMobject enters the main stage.

“BIMobject reduces the modelling time”

“The BIMobject marketplace helps me in the design phase when products aren’t well defined through technical sheets. Although we have set dimensions for our machines and plant components, BIMobject helps to reduce the modeling time,” says Matteo Gianninoto.

BIMobject offers a digital marketplace where manufacturers can connect with architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) professionals. The platform gives manufacturers a 24/7 365 way to reach architects and gives users – such as Matteo – free access to BIM objects as well as a direct line of communication with manufacturers.

But in which ways have the digital marketplace proven beneficial for Matteo’s daily work?

“BIMobject offers the possibility to choose between several BIM object families and the opportunity to use those which are relevant to the real characteristics with a satisfactory level of information. This makes the work smoother and lays out a foundation for better project development,” concludes Matteo Gianninoto.

BIM, EPD, and LCA: your blueprint for regulatory compliance and market visibility

06 December 2024

The construction industry is under immense pressure to address its environmental impact. Stringent regulations are pushing manufacturers to provide transparent and reliable information about their product's environmental performance. The goal? Achieve ambitious global climate targets by 2030. This shift is led by structured, digital, and actionable data that ensures products meet sustainability standards and gain visibility with specifiers. In this interview, BIMobject Group Director of Expansion & Data Partners Mattias Steinbichler discusses how BIM (Building Information Modeling), EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations), and LCAs (Life Cycle Assessments) empower manufacturers to meet these demands.

Digital Product Passport (DPP) in the construction industry - everything you need to know about the new EU regulation

11 July 2024

In 2024, the European Union (EU) is introducing new legislation mandating that all products sold must include a Digital Product Passport (DPP). The construction industry is among the first four sectors to adopt this requirement. By 2025, the necessary data structure will go live, enabling the creation of DPPs. By 2026, DPPs will be fully implemented within our business sector. The goal? To impact the transparency and sustainability of supply chains. In this blog, we’ll give you everything you need to know about DPPs, the EU’s requirements, and how to prepare for them.
